Penn Yan Community Garden set for revitalization with state grant

The Penn Yan Community Garden is poised for a significant makeover thanks to a state Ag and Markets grant, enhancing its features and accessibility. In collaboration with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Yates County and the Yates County Master Gardener Volunteers, the project includes the reconstruction of 30 raised garden beds and the installation of a water line from a nearby fire hydrant. Additionally, a ‘food forest garden’ will be established around the shade shed to further green the space.

Aiming to make the garden more accessible, the redesign focuses on accommodating community members with varying mobility challenges. A model garden bed has already been constructed, with the remaining 29 beds planned for completion soon. These beds, crafted by the Penn Yan FFA Club using larch lumber and galvanized metal, follow the Hugelkultur method, which utilizes decomposed woody material for a sustainable gardening approach.

The project is expected to be completed by September, marking a significant enhancement to the community garden that serves as a vital resource for local residents. The garden not only offers access to garden space and fresh food but also serves as a center for environmental education and community cooperation.
