The Canandaigua City School District has proposed a new budget for the 2024-25 academic year, featuring a 3.1% spending increase to $91.1 million from the previous year’s $88.2 million. This increase is set to raise the school tax bill for homeowners. For instance, a home assessed at $150,000 would see an annual tax increase of approximately $66, or an additional $5.50 per month.

The budget breakdown reveals that educational program costs account for 76% of the total at $69.3 million, with administrative expenses at 7.7% or just over $7 million, and capital costs making up 16.1% at $14.7 million. The district plans to introduce a new full-time director of elementary instruction and a math and science implementation teacher, while reducing three other full-time positions through attrition, resulting in a net reduction of one position.

Residents will vote on the budget, along with other propositions and board of education candidates, on May 21st from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at designated locations in Canandaigua. The projected tax rate will increase from $15.09 to $15.53 per $1,000 of assessed value, factoring in the STAR exemption.
