A tragic accident in a work zone on State Route 5&20 resulted in the death of a 74-year-old man and minor injuries to others on Friday. The New York State Police responded to the scene in the town of Aurelius at approximately 1:38 p.m. following reports of a multi-vehicle collision.

According to preliminary investigations, a tractor-trailer driven by Raymond E. Swank, 59, of Union Springs, failed to slow down for stopped traffic, colliding with a 2016 BMW X5. The impact caused the BMW to hit a 2015 Honda Accord, which then struck a 2014 Chevy Cruze. The initial collision led to subsequent crashes involving three vehicles in total.

The driver of the BMW was pronounced dead at the scene. Swank and Dale K. Leone, 65, of Auburn, the driver of the Honda, reported no injuries. Passengers Jeffery J. Leone, 62, from the Honda, and Isis V. Binns, 22, the driver of the Chevy, were transported to hospitals with minor injuries.

State Police have stated that the investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed yet.
