UPDATE: Verizon rep says service has been fully restored in Seneca Falls, Geneva areas

There hasn’t been any official word on a cause from Verizon, but wireless customers in Cayuga, Seneca, and Ontario counties reported service issues throughout the day on Thursday.

Customers reported a high volume of dropped calls and undelivered text messages. Data service was also impacted throughout the day.

Seneca County Emergency Management Director Melissa Taylor said the issues appear to be contained to Verizon customers. Some early reports this morning indicated that AT&T customers were also having wireless service issues. “Verizon Wireless is currently investigating outages which started earlier today and seem to be sporadic. This is a region wide issue,” she said. ” If Verizon Wireless customers are unable to call or text 911, they should try to get to a landline phone or connect to Wi-Fi calling.”

Late-Thursday, a representative from Verizon issued the following statement: “Earlier on Thursday, an issue resulted in a disruption in service for several hours to some customers in the Geneva and Seneca Falls area. The issue has been resolved and service is fully restored.”
