Major leadership changes at state office of cannabis management

  • Staff Report

Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Friday that Chris Alexander, the executive director of the state’s Office of Cannabis Management, will not be reappointed after his term ends in September. The announcement comes as the agency faces scrutiny over its handling of the state’s cannabis licensing and sales launch.

The Office of Cannabis Management, responsible for issuing marijuana dispensary licenses and overseeing cannabis regulation, has been criticized for delays and inefficiencies in its operations. This has prompted a review by the state Office of General Services.

Additionally, the agency’s Chief Equity Officer, Damian Fagon, who is currently under investigation over an allegation of retaliation, will also be removed from his position following the conclusion of the investigation, according to multiple sources. Fagon had been placed on administrative leave earlier this year.
