Canandaigua police say a city resident was taken into custody after a vandalism crime spree that left several buildings with thousands in damage.

Benjamin S. Shur, 29, was arrested by the City of Canandaigua Police Department on Sunday facing multiple charges after a series of vandalism incidents in the area. Shur is accused of causing significant property damage across several local businesses, leading to eleven counts of third-degree criminal mischief.

The arrest followed an incident on April 21 where police responded to a criminal mischief complaint at a business on South Main Street. It is alleged that Shur damaged numerous storage units, incurring over $7,000 in damages. During his processing at the police station, Shur further damaged a cabinet door and urinated on the floor, resulting in additional charges including criminal mischief and obstruction.

Shur’s recent criminal activities include causing close to $3,000 in damages to an electronic entry keypad and stealing a bicycle. He is also suspected in a burglary and several graffiti cases, with additional charges pending. Shur was taken to Ontario County Jail for centralized arraignment following his arrest.
