The Auburn City Council passed a resolution Thursday in support of deconstruction and reuse practices, making it the first municipality in New York to endorse such measures.

The Citizen reports that although the resolution is nonbinding, it aims to promote the preservation and recycling of building materials instead of demolition, aligning with environmental and economic sustainability goals.

Advocates have emphasized the need for significant reduction in waste in development, which can be achieved through deconstruction, noting that annually, the U.S. produces 600 million tons of construction and demolition waste, 80% of which could be reused.

The decision was unanimous to support the resolution.
