Anthony Rizzo’s walk-off single lifts Yankees over Tigers in series opener

The New York Yankees (21-13) were shutout through the first eight innings on Friday night at Yankee Stadium but rallied in the ninth and picked up a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers (18-14) on Anthony Rizzo’s walk-off single.

Aaron Judge led off the ninth with a single, Alex Verdugo followed with a bunt single, Giancarlo Stanton smoked a game-tying double, and then Rizzo grounded one through the middle for the game-winning hit.

New York had just two hits through the first eight innings before stringing together four straight in the ninth.

Marcus Stroman surrendered one run over 5.1 innings but struggled with command, walking five batters, including one with the bases loaded. Ian Hamilton, Victor González, and Dennis Santana combined for 3.2 scoreless.

The Yankees will try to secure a series win in the middle game of this three-game series on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. Clarke Schmidt will take the ball for New York.
