All NYSEG and RG&E customers will get smart meters: How will they work? How soon will they be rolled out?

NYSEG and RG&E have begun the rollout of advanced smart meters to their customers across upstate New York, aiming to modernize energy usage tracking for over 1.5 million service points. These new devices, which transmit hourly power usage and meter status wirelessly, will replace traditional meters unless customers opt out.

The installation process is streamlined and quick, usually taking just a few minutes and requiring no homeowner presence unless the meter location is inaccessible. Customers are informed ahead of time through a postcard notice, and installers, identifiable by company logos and photo IDs, ensure minimal disruption, including a brief power interruption during setup.

Officials said 1.3 million electric meters across the state are being upgraded and 600,000 gas meter modules are being added, for a total of 1.9 million units across the NYSEG and RG&E service area.

Smart meters offer significant advantages by automatically sending usage data, thereby reducing the need for manual meter readings and onsite visits. They also improve outage detection and simplify service changes, enhancing overall customer convenience and utility service efficiency.
