Sheriff Brian Schenck reports the arrest of an Aurora man following an investigation into inappropriate sexual conduct.

In late-March, investigators with the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation after it was reported that 34-year-old Thomas Cooper of Aurora had engaged in inappropriate communication with an individual whom he believed to be a 14-year-old female.

During the investigation, it was determined that Cooper had communicated electronically with this individual over the course of three months during which he made sexual requests and sent nude photographs.

Cooper was arrested and charged on April 30 with attempted dissemination of indecent material to a minor in the first degree, an E Felony. Cooper was arraigned at the centralized arraignment court and ordered held on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.

Officials confirmed Cooper was assistant chief for the Aurora Volunteer Fire Department. He was still listed as assistant chief under the department’s current staff on its website as of late-Wednesday. A post on the department’s Facebook page indicates one of its members is on a leave of absence due to an ongoing investigation.

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact detectives at 315-253-1610 or tips can be left at https://www.cayugacounty.us/452/Send-a-Tip.
