McGinty nets 100th goal, #7 Herons advance to semifinals

The seventh-ranked William Smith lacrosse team jumped out to a 9-1 lead and never looked back as it cruised to a 19-6 victory over St. Lawrence in a Liberty League first-round game on a rainy day on Boswell Field at David J. Urick Stadium this afternoon. With four goals in today’s game, senior Allie McGinty became the 28th player in program history to record her 100th career goal.

McGinty added two assists, finishing the game with six points. She shared those honors with senior Maddie Montgomery (5g, 1a) and Natalie Daniels (4g, 2a), who also had six points. Daniels won a game-high seven draw controls. Fellow sophomore Delaney Cassidy had five draw controls. Montgomery had a game-high five caused turnovers. Junior Maura Smeader played all 60 minutes in goal and made four saves.

Liz Evans and Jessica LaPlaca led the Saints with two goals each. Evans added an assist to finish with three points. Morgan Arakelian added three points for the Saints. Haley Sundstrom won three draw controls and Kelsey O’Brien had three caused turnovers and five ground balls. Courtney Lynn played all 60 minutes in goal. She made six saves and had five ground balls.

SCORING SUMMARY

  • William Smith opened the game with five unanswered goals. Montgomery started the run, scoring just under three minutes into the contest. She fired home a feed from McGinty for her 60th goal of the season. It was a woman-down goal. Ninety seconds later McGinty pocketed her 22nd goal of the year. Daniels gave William Smith a 3-0 lead with her 53rd goal of the year on a free position attempt. Montgomery added her 61st goal to make it a four-goal lead. With 7:59 left in the opening frame, senior Katherine Murray scored her 19th goal of the year on a feed from Daniels.
  • Bella Hillman briefly halted the William Smith run with her 11th goal of the year. It was on a free position shot.
  • Ten seconds later McGinty notched her second goal of the game bouncing home a pass from senior Emily Griffin. It was her 23rd goal of the year. Griffin continued the Herons’ momentum with a woman-up free position goal with under five minutes remaining in the frame. Montgomery completed her hat trick with a free position goal with 2:$8 left in the first quarter. One minute later, Murray notched her second goal of the game.
  • Arakelian rounded out the first quarter with her 14th goal of the year.
  • Senior Molly Davis scored 59 seconds into the second quarter, collecting her 26th goal of the year. Montgomery gave William Smith a nine-goal lead with her team-leading 63rd goal of the season. It was assisted by Griffin.
  • The Saints cut into their deficit with a three-goal run in the middle portion of the second quarter. Evans scored the first two goals. Her 34th and 35th tallies of the year were assisted by Arakelian. With 6:08 left in the half, Jessica LaPlaca scored her 20th goal of the year to make it 11-5, but that would be as close as St. Lawrence would get.
  • Daniels scored the final two goals of the first half. They were her 54th and 55th goals of the season.  Both tallies were unassisted and one came with the Herons’ playing a woman-up.
  • Molly Davis scored her 27th goal of the season three minutes into the third quarter off a feed from McGinty. Montgomery made it a 10-goal game with 9:36 left in the frame. Her woman-up goal was assisted by Cassidy. It was her team-leading 64th goal of the year.  McGinty and Daniels rounded out the frame with their 24th and 56th goals, respectively.
  • LaPlaca tacked on one more goal for the Saints early in the fourth quarter.
  • Murray completed her hat trick with 9:46 remaining in regulation, firing home a pass from Montgomery. McGinty rounded out the scoring with six minutes remaining. Her 100th career goal came on a free position attempt.

UP NEXT

William Smith will be back in action on Friday, May 3, when it hosts a Liberty League semifinal. The Herons, who are the No. 2 seed in the tournament will take on the winner of the Union-Rochester game. The Garnet Chargers and Yellowjackets game was scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
