Mets waste Luis Severino’s brilliant pitching performance in series-opening loss to Cubs

Luis Severino took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, but the New York Mets still dropped the series opener to the Chicago Cubs, falling 3-1 on Monday night.

Severino walked the leadoff batter in the eighth before giving up the first hit to Dansby Swanson, a single to center. The Cubs took advantage, tying the game on Nick Madrigal’s groundout. Then, in the ninth, Christopher Morel gave Chicago the lead with a two-run shot off Edwin Díaz. The Mets put two runners on in the ninth with one out, but DJ Stewart and Brett Baty struck out as the Cubs hung on for the victory.

Brandon Nimmo plated the only run with a solo home run in the first inning, his third of the season.

Box Score

The Mets will try to bounce back and even the four-game series on Tuesday with Sean Manaea on the bump. The first pitch is set for 7:10 p.m.
