For the second straight game, the New York Mets fell behind early and couldn’t complete a comeback in a 7-4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday evening at Citi Field.

New York (13-13) trailed 6-0 going into the bottom of the fifth before the offense finally woke up, putting up a four-spot to make it a two-run game. St. Louis added a huge insurance run in the eighth, but the Mets still had a chance as they loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth. However, Francisco Lindor capped off an 0-for-5 day with a fly out to center field to end the contest.

Pete Alonso hit his 200th career home run and eighth of the season with a two-run shot. Brandon Nimmo had a two-run single as part of a two-hit game.

Adrian Houser got rocked for a second straight outing, allowing six runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings.

Box Score

The Mets will try to avoid the three-game sweep on Sunday with Jose Quintana on the bump. The first pitch is set for 1:40 p.m.
