The Social Security Administration issued a significant update regarding Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments for May, ensuring beneficiaries receive two payments this month due to the June 1 payment falling on a Saturday.

As per the agency’s protocol, payments are rescheduled for the previous working day, in this case, Friday, May 31. This adjustment affects SSI recipients, retirees, survivors, and disabled individuals.

Details on double SSI payment for May

As June 1st falls on a weekend, SSI recipients will receive an additional payment this month, with the Social Security Administration rescheduling payments to the preceding work day. Thus, beneficiaries can expect payments on May 1st and Friday, May 31st.

Here’s how Social Security works

Since its inception, the Social Security Administration has played a crucial role in providing monthly benefits to millions of Americans, aiding them in coping with inflation and meeting fundamental needs such as food and shelter. Funded primarily through payroll deductions from employers and employees, this insurance program disburses billions of dollars in benefits monthly.

Under the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, eligible low-income seniors above 65 and disabled individuals receive monthly payments, typically on the first of each month. Qualified individuals may receive up to $943, with additional allowances for couples and those meeting Essential Person (EP) criteria. Notably, average monthly incomes vary across age groups, ranging from $814 for individuals under 18 to $574 for those aged 65 and above.

IMS Rule expected to increase SSI application approval rate

SSI applicants face stringent financial and medical criteria, often leading to high rates of denial. Between 2018 and 2020, approximately 60% of SSI applications were rejected. To facilitate access to the program, the Social Security Administration introduced a new In-Kind Support and Maintenance (ISM) rule, effective September 30, 2024, which excludes food from ISM calculations, addressing a common barrier to eligibility.
