Southern Cayuga decides against adopting ‘Cougars’ as new nickname because of ‘negative connotation’

The Southern Cayuga Central School District has decided against adopting “Cougars” as its new nickname, despite its popularity in a previous community vote, and will start the selection process over.

The Citizen reports the decision came after concerns were raised about the nickname’s negative connotations, according to District Superintendent Patrick Jensen. The district is seeking a replacement for the former “Chiefs” nickname in compliance with a state directive to eliminate Indigenous mascots.

A committee comprising students, staff, and community members, initially formed to select a new nickname, is set to reconvene in May. This group will reevaluate suggestions and establish criteria to narrow down the options to three to five potential nicknames for further consideration.
