With a lineup depleted by injuries, the Hobart lacrosse team put up a valiant fight on Senior Day on Boswell Field, but High Point hung on for an 11-10 Atlantic 10 Conference win this afternoon. Senior Chad Bach led the Statesmen with a game-high five points on two goals and three assists.

The Statesmen trailed by four at the start of the fourth quarter but rallied to pull within one following Bach’s goal with 48 seconds remaining. Hobart won the ensuing faceoff and eventually got one more shot, but it missed wide, and the Statesmen were unable to generate another chance in the time remaining.

Most of the teams’ statistics were virtually even. High Point had a 52-51 edge in shots and 36-32 in ground balls. Hobart had a 13-11 advantage in faceoffs and cleared at a higher rate (.888 to 783). Both teams committed 16 turnovers.

Bach’s season-high for points was supported by three-point games from senior Sam Ward(2-1), junior Alex Rosa (3-0), and junior Will Delano (2-1). Faceoff specialist Adam Sheawas 13-of-24 at the X and corralled nine ground balls, raising his career total to 400. He’s the first Statesman to reach that milestone. First-year long-stick midfielder Nickolas Sotiropoulos recorded a team-high three caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Elhanan Wilson made 13 saves, including eight in the fourth quarter.

Nine different Panthers recorded points, led by Jack VanOverbeke’s four points on a goal and three assists. Brayden Mayea, Ian Cann and Matt Lutzel each scored twice. Goalie Zack Overend made 13 saves and a game-high four caused turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Ward, who made his first career start, had a goal and an assist in the opening 15 minutes to help Hobart take a 3-2 lead.
  • Bach doubled the Statesmen lead with his first goal less than three minutes into the second quarter.
  • High Point scored the final three goals of the half to carry a 5-4 lead into the break.
  • The Panthers extended their run to six straight goals with the first three tallies of the second half. Six different players scored for the visitors during the surge.
  • Rosa and first-year Chris Patterson scored back-to-back to end Hobart’s drought, but Cann and Lutzel answered to lift HPU to a 10-6 lead through three quarters.
  • Bach factored heavily into Hobart’s ill-fated comeback attempt. He assisted on goals by Delano and Rosa early in the frame to make it a 10-8 game.
  • VanOverbeke scored what proved to be the game-winner midway through the quarter.
  • Ward netted his second goal of the game with just over five minutes, trimming the Hobart deficit to two.
