Australian basketball star Ben Simmons will be given the chance to prove himself with the Brooklyn Nets next season.

According to the New York Post, the Nets are not seeking to buy out the 27-year-old’s final year contract worth $40.3 million.

Simmons was a three-time NBA All-Star during his time with the Philadelphia 76ers, but his career has gone downhill in recent years.

Since arriving in Brooklyn in February 2022, he has averaged just 6.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 1.2 steals per game for the Nets.

Question marks over his attitude and persistent injury issues have sparked talk that Simmons will never fulfil the potential that made him the number one draft pick in 2016.

The 76ers’ decision sparked a flurry of betting activity in Australia, with punters there eager to wager on them winning the NBA title with Simmons in their ranks.

However, sports betting apps in Australia avoided any payouts as Simmons and the 76ers consistently came up short in the play-offs.

Following a fall-out with the club, Simmons was traded to the Nets. He has subsequently made just 57 appearances for the Brooklyn-based outfit.

Give his problems in recent years, the Nets would find it difficult to trade the Melbourne-born star this summer without giving up some additional assets.

On that basis, they have decided to keep him in Brooklyn in the hope he can rediscover the form that saw him chosen as the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2018.
