What inspired Doud Apartment Homes to focus on promoting sustainability in rental living?

Doud Apartments, owned and operated by two Rochester-native families, endeavors to repurpose vacant spaces for long-term sustainability in our community. Recognizing the enduring nature of these structures, we prioritize building for longevity, ensuring they withstand the passage of time. Our clubhouse, which is nearly a century old, serves as a testament to our commitment, aiming to stand tall for generations to come.

What are some practical tips that renters can easily incorporate into their daily lives to reduce their carbon footprint?

Recycling is incredibly important! It’s simple to incorporate into your routine with a bit of organization. We provide complimentary weekly recycling pick-up for our tenants. Another easy way to embrace recycling is by keeping a paper bag in your home to collect paper, plastic, cans, or glass items, which you can then dispose of along with your regular trash.

Renters also tend to be more consumer-conscious to make the most of their space. Look for multi-purpose items from sustainable brands, like benches that double as storage or a futon that folds out to a second bed.

Can you provide some rental-friendly tips for tenants who want to make their living space more energy-efficient?

At Doud, every unit is equipped with LED light bulbs, known for their longer lifespan and energy efficiency compared to traditional bulbs. Renters and homeowners can easily swap out their existing bulbs for LED ones, potentially noticing a positive impact on their utility bills. Another tip is to keep your thermostat set to specific thresholds during winter and summer.

What are some practical ways renters can reduce water consumption in their apartments without major renovations?

Improving the energy efficiency of your space can be achieved by simply adopting new habits during daily chores. Be mindful of water usage when doing laundry, washing dishes, and showering. Opting for high-efficiency appliances such as dishwashers, washers, and dryers can significantly reduce water and energy consumption compared to standard appliances. We are proud to offer these in our units to enhance sustainability measures. When washing dishes, run your dishwasher when it’s full. If washing by hand, don’t leave the water running. Have a container filled with soapy water to clean and another filled with clear water to rinse. Additionally, using cleaning products with environmentally friendly ingredients can further contribute to sustainability efforts.

Are there any simple yet effective strategies renters can employ to minimize waste and promote recycling within their rental units?

Small adjustments can lead to significant changes. One simple step to minimize waste is switching to reusable shopping bags. Additionally, considering alternative uses for common household items can make a difference. Repurpose old sauce and pickle jars to organize various items in your home. Furthermore, many single-use grocery items can be replaced with reusable alternatives such as baking sheet liners, cloth towels, and dryer balls.

What strategies do you recommend for renters to conserve energy and reduce utility bills without making permanent changes to their rental units?

Conserve energy by always turning off your lights when you leave your home. You can also use timers to turn off your television, lamps, and other commonly used devices, which will help decrease energy consumption.

Can you share any tips for renters on how to choose sustainable and eco-friendly furniture and decor options for their apartments?

Typically, cheaper furniture tends to have a shorter lifespan compared to higher-quality, more expensive pieces. While budget-friendly options can help personalize your space affordably, they are often discarded sooner. Quality furniture, although pricier, generally lasts longer. However, it’s important to note that a higher price doesn’t always guarantee better quality. Look for well-made pieces without staples, nails, or excessive glue to ensure durability.

Looking ahead, what future sustainability initiatives or goals does Doud Apartment Homes have in store for their rental properties?

As private managers of Doud Apartment Homes, we have the flexibility to prioritize sustainability in our building and maintenance practices. Whether it’s turnover or ongoing maintenance, we’re committed to doing things correctly and implementing high-quality products and practices. Our goal is to create a welcoming, environmentally friendly community that can accommodate residents for years to come.
