Cayuga Community College nursing students receive boost from donation

A generous donation to Cayuga Community College will help nursing students overcome financial hurdles. The Mary Porcari Brady Fund contributed $10,000 to establish an emergency fund for nursing students at risk of leaving their program due to unforeseen financial difficulties. This contribution, matched by the Cayuga County Community College Foundation, aims to support students facing challenges such as rent, medical expenses, and other sudden costs. The initiative reflects the college’s commitment to ensuring that aspiring nurses can continue their education without the burden of financial strain.

Mary Porcari Brady, a nurse who dedicated her career to healthcare in upstate New York, is the inspiration behind this significant gift. After overcoming personal tragedy and completing her nursing education in 1971, Brady worked in various healthcare settings until her retirement in 2000. Her children established the fund in her honor in 2006 to support future generations of nurses, honoring their mother’s legacy of care and compassion in the nursing field.

Cayuga Community College’s nursing program director, Mary Driscoll, expressed gratitude for the fund’s support, highlighting its potential to make a meaningful difference in students’ lives. This emergency fund is expected to empower nursing students to pursue their degrees and careers without the added stress of financial uncertainty.
