State budget eclipsed by sun: Lawmakers pass another budget extender

  • Staff Report

New York legislators have passed a state budget extension to keep the government operational through Thursday, with provisions to fund state employee salaries until the following Tuesday. This latest extension was approved by the state Senate on Monday and had already been passed by the Assembly over the weekend. Governor Kathy Hochul signed the extension into law on Monday afternoon.

The move comes as the state budget, initially due on April 1, is now over a week late. Disagreements over housing, education funding, and health care are the primary issues delaying a final agreement. Liz Krueger, the state Senate Finance Committee chair, indicated that negotiations are progressing but acknowledged sticking points remain.

Krueger also mentioned the likelihood of requiring another budget extension beyond Thursday, with additional negotiation sessions planned for Tuesday and Friday. This indicates ongoing efforts to reach a comprehensive agreement on the state’s financial plan.
