The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office announced the addition of two new K9 units, Shaver and Ernie, enhancing their law enforcement and safety efforts. Sheriff David Cirencione shared that K9 Shaver, named in memory of a fallen officer, is set to become the first K9 dedicated to the correctional facility, focusing on tracking and detecting jail contraband.

K9 Ernie, named after a historic undersheriff, joins Sgt. Dana Egburtson, taking over from the retiring K9 Fennell. Both new K9s are undergoing training for specialized detection tasks, with plans for them to be fully operational by summer.

These additions come as the Ontario County K9 Team continues to play a vital role in public safety, responding to over 120 calls in the past year, including searches for missing individuals and crime scene investigations. The Sheriff expressed gratitude for the community’s support, emphasizing the importance of the K9 unit in maintaining safety and security in Ontario County.
