Ontario County Jail medical unit reaffirms quality healthcare commitment with accreditation

The Medical Unit of the Ontario County Correctional Facility recently announced its successful reaccreditation by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), marking a continuous commitment to excellence in healthcare for the incarcerated population since its first accreditation in 2008. This achievement underscores the facility’s dedication to adhering to the NCCHC’s rigorous standards, which signify the best in correctional health services, spanning patient care, health promotion, safety, and disease prevention among other critical areas.

This distinction follows a comprehensive assessment conducted in October 2023, led by seasoned physicians and correctional healthcare specialists, affirming the Ontario County Jail’s adherence to jail-specific healthcare standards. The 282-bed facility, which currently houses an average daily population of about 90 individuals, faces the growing complexity of inmate health needs, including addiction and mental health challenges.

Sheriff David Cirencione and NCCHC CEO Deborah Ross commend the Medical Unit’s unwavering dedication to providing quality healthcare, emphasizing the importance of such care not only for inmates but also as a vital public health concern. The Ontario County Jail’s ongoing commitment to innovation, excellence, and efficiency in healthcare services reflects a broader mission to meet constitutional obligations and improve community health standards.

The National Commission on Correctional Health Care, a pivotal organization in setting healthcare standards in correctional facilities, lauds the Ontario County Jail Medical Unit for maintaining accreditation, a voluntary process symbolizing the pinnacle of correctional healthcare standards.
