Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is urging the House of Representatives to pass the “FEND Off Fentanyl Act,” aimed at combating the opioid epidemic by targeting cartels responsible for importing drugs into the United States.

The legislation focuses on dismantling the supply chain of illicit opioids at its source, a move that Gillibrand believes will significantly disrupt the flow of fentanyl and other dangerous substances into communities across the country.

While the legislation targets higher-level operations, advocates point to the importance of also addressing the epidemic on a community level. ACR Health, a nonprofit organization, emphasizes the need for increased support services for individuals battling drug addiction, including harm reduction and access to care and treatment.

They’re calling for a balanced approach that includes enforcement against cartels, as well as enhanced funding for community-based services to aid those directly affected by drug use, underlining the ongoing struggle against the opioid crisis and the critical need for comprehensive solutions.
