Cayuga Health System significantly impacted the economies of Schuyler and Tompkins counties, with an annual contribution of $675 million, an 8% increase from the previous year, according to a report by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS). As major employers, Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca and Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls create over 3,500 jobs, highlighting the essential role of healthcare facilities in sustaining local economies.

Beyond its economic impact, Cayuga Health invested more than $117 million in community benefits in 2023, including charitable and subsidized care. This effort supports low-income, elderly, and underserved communities, reflecting Cayuga Health’s commitment to addressing social determinants of health. Initiatives like the new screening process to connect patients with local resources underscore the organization’s integrated approach to community health.

Despite its contributions, Cayuga Health faces financial challenges due to underpayments from Medicare and Medicaid, an issue affecting rural hospitals statewide. Cayuga Health and its CFO, Rebecca Gould, are engaging with lawmakers to bridge the gap between current state Medicaid rates and the needs of upstate healthcare systems, ensuring they continue to serve as community pillars and economic drivers.
