Over 50,000 Harriet Tubman coins have been sold

In a significant display of public interest, sales of the Harriet Tubman commemorative coins have exceeded 50,000 units nearly three months after their release, the U.S. Mint announced. The coins, which pay tribute to Tubman’s pivotal role in the Underground Railroad and her contributions during the Civil War, launched on January 4th, quickly gaining popularity with over 45,000 purchases in the first month alone.

Despite a slight slowdown in sales pace, the milestone of 50,000 sold coins was reached this month, including 3,725 sets containing a mix of a $5 gold coin, $1 silver coin, and a clad half-dollar. Among these, the silver dollar emerged as the favorite choice, with thousands sold in both proof and uncirculated conditions. The gold coins, being the priciest, also saw over a thousand sales each in both proof and uncirculated versions.

This initiative, sanctioned by Congress and President Joe Biden in 2022, aims to sell up to 50,000 gold coins, 400,000 silver dollars, and 750,000 clad coins. Profits from the coin sales are designated to support the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, promising further boosts in sales as tourist seasons approach and the Tubman Home plans to sell coins directly to visitors.
