The New York Mets opened their season on Friday afternoon at Citi Field and fell 3-1 to the Milwaukee Brewers.

New York jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Starling Marte’s solo shot, but that would be the only hit the Mets could manage as they were completely shut down the rest of the way.

Jose Quintana allowed two runs on six hits over 4.2 innings while striking out four and walking two. Jorge López gave up the third run, while Drew Smith and Micahel Tonkin had scoreless outings.

There was also a benches-clearing incident that took place in the eighth inning after Jeff McNeil took exception to a slide from Rhys Hoskins, but there were no punches or ejections.

Box Score

The Mets will try to even the series on Saturday at 1:40 p.m. as Luis Severino makes his first start as a Met.
