False hostage report in Canandaigua turns out to be prank, authorities say

In Canandaigua, a reported hostage situation on Pleasant Street Thursday afternoon led to a significant police deployment, including units from the Canandaigua Police, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, and the New York State Police. The emergency call described a dangerous scenario involving a “homicidal and suicidal person,” prompting an immediate and substantial response from law enforcement.

However, the tense situation was later identified as a hoax, specifically a “Swatting Call” – a prank designed to provoke a massive police presence at a particular location. The incident was declared resolved around 6:30 p.m., after authorities determined the threat was fabricated.

Investigations are ongoing as officials seek to trace the source of the false alarm. This incident underscores the serious implications of swatting, which not only diverts critical emergency resources but also poses significant risks to public safety and law enforcement officers.
