Firefighters extinguish brush fire near animal shelter and RG&E substation

  • Staff Report

Firefighting teams successfully quelled a substantial brush fire on Tuesday afternoon near Lollypop Farm, an animal shelter in Perinton. The fire, reported just before 2 p.m. across from the shelter on Victor Road, posed challenges due to dry conditions and quickly spreading flames, especially through cattail plants. Multiple fire departments collaborated to transport water into the affected woodland area.

By 4 p.m., the majority of the fire was under control, though a portion threatened to reach a nearby Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E) substation off Parnell Road. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze entirely by 4:30 p.m., preventing potential damage to the substation. The quick and coordinated response averted a larger crisis.

The origin of the fire is currently under investigation. The incident highlights the responsiveness and teamwork of local fire departments in managing and mitigating the risks of brush fires, particularly in areas close to critical infrastructure and community resources.
