Mets send Mark Vientos to Triple-A Syracuse, Zack Short makes team

When the New York Mets signed veteran designated hitter J.D. Martinez to a one-year contract earlier this week, Mark Vientos’ roster spot seemed to be in jeopardy.

That was the case, as the club optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday.

However, Martinez will spend at least the first 10 days of the season in the minors to get more at-bats.

“As we looked at the roster construction, some of the matchups early in the season, we just thought this made the right sense both for [Vientos] from a playing time perspective and our team at the major league level,” president of baseball operations David Stearns said.

Additionally, infielder Zack Short had made the Opening Day roster and first baseman Ji-Man Choi was informed he did not make the team. Choi now has to decide whether to accept a minor-league assignment or become a free agent.

The Mets full Opening Day roster will be finalized over the next couple of days.
