Wegmans announced that its stores in the path of totality for the 2024 total solar eclipse will briefly close on April 8, from 3 to 3:30 p.m., to allow employees a unique opportunity to witness the celestial event. A total of 48 stores across upstate New York will participate in the temporary closure, pausing all operations including pharmacy services, grocery shopping, and Meals2Go pickups and deliveries during this period.

Patrick Bourcy, a regional manager for Wegmans, emphasized the company’s desire to create a memorable experience for its employees, acknowledging the rare nature of a total solar eclipse. This gesture has been well received by both employees and customers, with customer Lyn Kemp expressing appreciation for the company’s consideration towards its staff.

The decision by Wegmans to prioritize this astronomical event reflects its commitment to employee welfare and has been praised by the community. Among the stores scheduled for closure are locations in Auburn, Canandaigua, Geneseo, Geneva, Ithaca, and Newark ensuring that employees in these areas can safely enjoy the eclipse, provided they have the appropriate viewing glasses.
