  • Staff Report

The Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps has announced its 5th Annual Earth Day Cleanup event, scheduled for Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Syracuse. Eager to bolster Onondaga Lake’s ecosystem, the event encourages volunteers to clear debris from the lake’s southwest shoreline. Participants will also have the unique opportunity to learn about the local bird populations, wildlife, and the significance of maintaining healthy habitats within the Onondaga Lake watershed from experts at Audubon NY, Onondaga Audubon, and Parsons.

The cleanup will commence at Honeywell’s Onondaga Lake Visitors Center, with volunteers then proceeding to Harbor Brook. Participants are advised to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for cleanup activities, and while plastic bags for debris collection will be provided, volunteers are asked to bring their own work gloves. The event is set to proceed regardless of weather conditions.

Registration is essential for those wishing to take part in the Earth Day Cleanup, as spaces are limited. Interested individuals can register online or contact the organizers directly for more information. This event not only offers a chance for community members to contribute to environmental preservation efforts but also to witness firsthand the conservation success story of Onondaga Lake, including its 90 acres of restored habitat that support an array of wildlife including nesting Bald Eagles.
