Renovation scam: Wayne County contractor faces felony charges after investigation

  • Staff Report

The New Hartford Police Department has issued a warning following the arrest of a Wolcott contractor, William Friello, 56, accused of scamming a local couple out of $38,000. In the fall of 2022, the couple hired Friello for home renovations, agreeing on the work and timeframe before paying the substantial deposit. However, Friello never initiated the promised renovations and allegedly failed to refund the couple’s money despite their repeated requests over several months.

Friello surrendered to the New Hartford Police Department on March 14, after an arrest warrant was issued, facing charges of grand larceny in the third degree, a class D felony. Following his arraignment in the Town of New Hartford Court, Friello was released on his own recognizance.

In light of this incident, the New Hartford Police Department advises residents to exercise caution when hiring contractors, suggesting they ask for references, agree on payment schedules based on work completion, or secure a performance bond to avoid similar scams.
