Seneca Housing Inc. earns key designation to tackle local housing crisis

Seneca Housing Inc., based in Seneca Falls, New York, has recently been designated as a Rural Preservation Company by NYS Homes & Community Renewal. Announced in early March, this status grants the nonprofit access to crucial funding for housing development projects across Seneca County. This move comes in response to a Housing State of Emergency declared by the Seneca County Board of Supervisors in September 2023, following a Housing Needs Assessment that highlighted a severe housing shortage and affordability crisis.

The designation is a pivotal moment for Seneca Housing Inc., allowing it to broaden its efforts in creating new rental and homeownership opportunities. In partnership with Seneca County and the Finger Lakes Regional Land Bank Corporation, the organization plans to convert vacant, abandoned, and tax-foreclosed properties into viable housing options. This initiative aligns with the county’s strategy to use good housing policy as a foundation for economic growth and community success.

Officials from Seneca County and Seneca Housing Inc. expressed enthusiasm about the designation, emphasizing the potential for significant impact on the local housing landscape. With a focus on developing safe, decent, and affordable housing, Seneca Housing Inc. is set to play a central role in addressing the housing needs of Seneca County residents, leveraging its newfound capacity to initiate large-scale neighborhood development projects.
