Newark progressing on DRI work: Mayor Taylor is optimistic

Newark Mayor Jonathan Taylor recently expressed optimism about the village’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative projects, anticipating a series of public and private developments slated to begin in 2025.

Despite the gradual progress typical of DRI endeavors, as exemplified by Geneva’s ongoing efforts since its 2016 award, Taylor told the Finger Lakes Times the village is ready with contracts being finalized and plans moving forward.

Among the notable projects earmarked for commencement in 2025 is the village’s canal port improvements. This ambitious undertaking, backed by nearly $1.6 million in DRI funds, aims to enhance the canal’s appeal with an amphitheater, kayak/canoe launch, and streetscape upgrades.

Despite setbacks, such as the withdrawal of a developer for the Newark Canal Front Hotel, the village remains hopeful for new partnerships. Other significant projects include the construction of the Newark Regional Health and Wellness Center and the transformation of the former Sarah Coventry manufacturing space into Coventry Commons apartments.
