A Wayne County man, William Cook, 32, of Newark, is facing charges following an incident where he allegedly stole items from a Wegmans store in Perinton and then assaulted a deputy who attempted to apprehend him.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reported responding to the theft at the Wegmans on Route 31 around 11:10 a.m. on Wednesday.
After fleeing the store, Cook was located by deputies on Swan Trail, leading to a brief foot chase. Upon his capture, Cook resisted arrest, injuring a deputy’s eye in the process. He is now charged with assault, resisting arrest, and petit larceny.
Following the altercation, Cook was detained and is being held at Monroe County Jail with bail set. The injured deputy received medical attention for the eye injury and has since been released.
