2024 State of the Union: Stakes high for Biden as polling remains poor

In his upcoming State of the Union address, President Joe Biden hopes to foster a sense of optimism among Americans, countering critics who have been portraying a bleak scenario of the country under his leadership. House Speaker Rep. Mike Johnson and other Republicans have labeled the current state as one of “crisis,” “catastrophe,” and “decline.” Amidst concerns about immigration, which polls indicate is a top issue for many voters, Biden is expected to highlight his visit to the border and criticized Republicans for obstructing relevant legislation.

Former President Donald Trump and other Republicans have been vocal about their opposition to Biden’s policies, especially on immigration, asserting that “open borders are going to destroy our country.” Meanwhile, Biden’s challenges are magnified by poll results indicating Trump’s substantial lead in areas such as border security, crime, economy, and concerns over Biden’s age and health. Despite these obstacles, Biden humorously addressed age concerns on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” drawing comparisons with Trump.

Biden is also expected focused on economic achievements, including a reduction in inflation, wage increases, and significant job growth under “Bidenomics.” However, Republican claims that Biden’s policies have led to economic downturns continue to resonate with the public. Biden will also emphasize his stance on reproductive rights, reminding voters of Trump’s role in overturning Roe v. Wade, a message that resonates with many Americans according to the First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden.
