The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office says they’re hearing about an uptick in scam phone calls from area residents.
According to a news release, the sheriff’s office has received a number of complaints from people saying a person purporting to be a deputy is calling, telling the recipients that they’ve missed a court appearance.
The scammer then says there’s a warrant out for the person’s arrest; and that payment of bail is required over the phone.
Sheriff Cirencione reminds residents that the sheriff’s office would never make any such calls or claims over the phone.
Anyone who receives a call like this should contact their office immediately.
