Auburn officials worried about closure of Lake Avenue bridge in 2025

The Auburn City Council is voicing concerns over the impact of a potential closure of the Lake Avenue bridge during its $9 million rehabilitation in 2025.

The bridge, a key passage over the Owasco River, may be closed to both pedestrians and vehicles, prompting city officials to propose detour plans.

The closure, aimed at ensuring cost-efficiency and a quicker completion of the project, has raised questions about its effect on schoolchildren’s routes and emergency services.

Mayor Jimmy Giannettino and Councilor Ginny Kent highlighted concerns about the extended detour’s impact on children walking to school, suggesting the Auburn Enlarged City School District offer bus services to affected students.

Funded partly by a $4.9 million state grant, the project seeks to complete the bridge’s overhaul within one construction season, starting March 2025.
