Jarvis’ double-double leads Herons in thrilling season finale

The William Smith basketball team fell to Union College 60-55 in its season finale this afternoon in Bristol Gymnasium. With the win, the Garnet Chargers clinch the fifth seed in the Liberty League Championships, while the Herons finish in seventh, one spot out of the postseason picture.

Three Herons dropped double-digit points against the Garnet Chargers this afternoon and were led by senior Brooke Jarvis with 17 points and a career-high 20 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. Graduate student Kerstin Kelly added 10 points, while first-year Amelia McCulley chipped in 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Union was led by Grace Ardito with 16 points and Kennedy Clark with 12 points, six rebounds and three steals. Jenna Foreman added 10 points and five rebounds for the Garnet Chargers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • William Smith started off hot on a 13-4 run behind Jarvis’ six points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Carly Scott nailed a three pointer down the stretch to secure a 17-6 Heron lead despite Union’s effort to claw back into the game.
  • Scott opened the second quarter with another deep three to extend the Herons lead to 22-7. Union responded with three back-to-back threes to bring them within eight.
  • The Garnet Chargers continued to chip away at William Smith’s lead by using 18 points from its bench to tie the game at 27-27 to finish the first half.
  • The two sides traded points to open the second half with two lead changes and three tie scores between the two. First-year Ava Lobozzo stepped up in the third, shooting 2-for-2 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line to combine for six points in the quarter.
  • Union grabbed the momentum early in the fourth, extending its lead to 11 points before a three-pointer by Kelly brought the Herons back within six.
  • The Garnet Chargers used the clock and strong shooting from the line to close out the game on top 60-55.
