#21 Hobart downs Hamilton 5-4, advances to semifinals

The 21st-ranked Hobart Squash team defeated Hamilton College 5-4 in the quarterfinals of the Summers Cup at the College Squash Association Team Championships in Philadelphia this morning. With the win, the Statesmen advance to the semifinals round where they will take on 24th-ranked Bowdoin.

MATCH SUMMARY

  • Hobart, which is the No. 1 seed in the draw, secured the match winning in the top five spots in the lineup.
  • Senior Hussein Labib opened the match with a 3-0 sweep of William Rice. He won 11-3, 11-3, 11-6. Labib is now 7-11 on the season, playing all 18 matches in the No. 1 spot.
  • The Statesmen took a 2-0 lead in the match when first-year Dhirren Rajarathinam defeated Tate Suratt at No. 2. Rajarathinam won 10-12, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7 for his 12th straight victory. He has a team-leading 16 wins on the year and is 10-0 in the No. 2 spot.
  • Junior Joseph Raskin Lantos extended Hobart’s lead to 3-0 with his win over Jacob Shulman at No. 4. Raskin Lantos won 11-7, 7-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-6. He is now 6-5 on the year with a 4-3 mark in the No. 4 spot.
  • Senior Omar Kiwan swept Tobey Suratt, 11-3, 11-9, 11-5. Kiwan has won four straight matches and is now 12-5 this season, including an 8-1 mark in the No. 3 spot.
  • Sophomore Javier De La Vega clinched the overall victory, knocking off  Nicholas Carabatsos, 11-9, 11-5, 8-11, 11-2 at No. 5. It was De La Vega’s 10th win of the season.
  • In the closest match of the day, Matthew Aldana was edged by Carlo Caffuzzi, 11-5, 5-11, 11-8, 11-13, 12-10.

UP NEXT

Hobart will take on Bowdoin tomorrow at 9 a.m. The Polar Bears, who are the fourth seed, defeated fifth-seeded Dickinson 6-3. The match will take place at 9 a.m. at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center.
