Herons fall to Thoroughbreds

The William Smith basketball team suffered a 65-37 Liberty League loss at Skidmore this evening. The Herons hung with the Thoroughbreds in the first quarter, but the home team found another gear in the second quarter to carry the day.

First-years Amelia McCulley and Giana Lobozzo led William Smith with seven points apiece. Lobozzo also logged a game-high four steals. Senior Brooke Jarvis, first-year McKeyla Badilla Chaves and first-year Miranda Martin share the team lead with five rebounds apiece.

Skidmore had two players in double figures led by Amelia Medolla’s game-high 15 points.

KEY STATS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first quarter, Skidmore never trailed, but the Thoroughbreds couldn’t get much separation from William Smith.
  • A McCulley layup with under a minute to go in the opening frame made it a one-point game, 13-12, but Andi Levitz made a 3-pointer to give the Thoroughbreds a four-point cushion after one quarter.
  • Levitz’s triple kicked off an 18-2 Skidmore run that stretched the Skidmore lead to 31-14.
  • The Thoroughbreds (18-4, 13-2) led 36-16 going into halftime.
  • William Smith (5-17, 5-10) continued to battle in the second half, but couldn’t make enough of a dent in the Skidmore lead.

BATTLE OF THE BIRDS

  • William Smith will play its final road game of the regular season, visiting Bard (4-17, 0-15). Tipoff between the Herons and Raptors is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10.
