TCAT bus stuck on icy hill in Ithaca; passengers safely relocated

On a late Sunday afternoon, a Route 51 bus operated by Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit (TCAT) encountered icy conditions on Snyder Hill Road, resulting in the bus becoming immobilized near the intersection of Skyvue Road and Dove Drive. The incident led to a temporary rerouting of traffic in the area. TCAT confirmed that the driver and three passengers onboard were unharmed.

Efforts to free the stuck bus were made by a TCAT dispatcher who arrived at the scene. Despite the use of salt and shovels, these attempts were unsuccessful, and the bus required towing. TCAT spokesperson said that two passengers were transported to their destinations in a TCAT vehicle, while arrangements were made for the third passenger to connect to a bus heading to Dryden.

Officials noted that the Snyder Hill area is notorious for its challenging and unpredictable road conditions, particularly during winter. This incident underscores the difficulties faced by public transit in adverse weather conditions.
