Gas prices trend downward across the Finger Lakes, stay cheaper than national average

Gas prices in the Finger Lakes continue to decline this winter, with a two-cent drop in the past week and a significant 20-cent decrease over the last month. As of Monday, the average gas price in Rochester stands at $3.26 per gallon, slightly above the national average of $3.11. Despite this, the gap between local and national prices is narrowing, with the national average experiencing a three-cent rise since last week.

AAA notes that gas prices usually hit their lowest in December and January, with peaks typically occurring in June and July. Current trends, influenced by fluctuating oil prices, reduced gas demand, and increasing domestic gas stocks, suggest possible national average increases in the coming weeks. GasBuddy’s survey highlighted the price variance in Rochester, ranging from $2.91 to nearly a dollar more per gallon at different stations.

Rochester’s gas prices are notably cheaper compared to Syracuse but slightly more expensive than Buffalo. Elmira boasts the lowest average gas price in upstate New York at $3.04 per gallon. For more information on gas price trends, AAA’s website provides detailed insights.
