A potentially fatal accident was averted in Fairport thanks to a quick-acting good Samaritan. A car, following GPS directions, mistakenly turned onto railroad tracks near Main Street, becoming suspended on the tracks.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. Wednesday when the driver, instructed by their GPS to turn onto Railroad Street, accidentally turned too early onto the railroad tracks. Realizing the danger, a nearby citizen assisted the driver in safely exiting the vehicle.
Minutes after their escape, a westbound train collided with the stranded car, dragging it about half a mile up the tracks. The car was eventually recovered near LiDestri Food and Drink.
The accident led to a temporary closure of Main Street, which has since reopened.
