The Newfield Town Planning Board kicked off 2024 with a focus on community development, discussing their comprehensive plan and a proposed solar farm project in their first meeting of the year on January 3.
Central to the board’s agenda is the comprehensive plan, adopted on September 12, which involves collaboration with local business leaders to integrate their insights. Board member Mike McLaughlin emphasized the importance of community input, proposing a survey to gather broader perspectives.
Additionally, a significant solar development project is under review, involving the construction of five community solar farms near Superior Heights and Elmira Road. Residents have expressed concerns about property values and community impact, which the board is taking into consideration.
The planning board is compiling a list of questions and concerns for the solar project’s proponents. A public hearing is required before the project can proceed, as per Newfield’s regulations. Developers are also engaging with affected homeowners to address their concerns.
