Yates legislature increases funding for contaminated soil removal

The Yates County Legislature has authorized additional funding for a significant capital project, addressing the challenge of contaminated soil at the construction site.

At a recent meeting, the Legislature approved an extra $65,000 payment to C&S Engineering, the Syracuse-area company managing the construction in Benton Center, according to the Finger Lakes Times. This project encompasses the new county highway department, emergency services office, and clinical space for the public health department.

The decision to increase funding was made by a 12-2 vote.

Originally capped at $900,000, the contract with C&S Engineering had already seen an increase of $165,000 last year for the removal, treatment, and disposal of contaminated soil from the existing county highway department site.

The latest increase of $65,000 will be drawn from a contingency fund, reflecting the ongoing financial adjustments required for this $26 million capital undertaking.
