Harriet Tubman coins will go on sale this weekend

Starting this Thursday at noon, the U.S. Mint will open pre-ordering for Harriet Tubman commemorative coins on its website, catalog.usmint.gov. The collection includes a $5 gold coin, a $1 silver coin, and a clad half-dollar, with the option to purchase three-coin sets as well.

Coin buyers will contribute surcharges to the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati. If all coins are sold, each site stands to gain $4.75 million. The sales will not only involve the coins but also t-shirts and other related items.

The coin sales will support the expansion of programming, hiring of additional staff, and improvements at the Harriet Tubman Home. The program was initially proposed by Congress members, including former U.S. Rep. John Katko, in 2020 and was passed in 2022. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law.
