YMCA’s new regional CEO has aggressive growth plan for organization

The YMCA of Greater Rochester, under the new leadership of President and CEO Ernest Lamour, has unveiled a dynamic five-year strategic plan titled “Uniting for a Better Us.” This plan aims to significantly expand the YMCA’s influence and membership, particularly among youth and other community members.

Lamour, who took over on January 9, 2023 brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles at the Ridgewood YMCA in New Jersey and the Stamford YMCA in Connecticut. His deep connection with the YMCA, dating back to his youth in Stamford, Connecticut, after moving from Haiti, fuels his passion for the organization’s community impact.

The strategic plan focuses on increasing YMCA memberships from approximately 95,000 to 150,000, doubling the number of people served in Rochester, and enhancing youth services. It also aims to boost annual revenue and philanthropic support. Lamour emphasizes the importance of partnerships with local businesses and community organizations, including welcoming new board members.

With an operating budget of nearly $60 million and employing over 2,160 workers, the YMCA of Greater Rochester is among the country’s top 25 largest YMCAs. It operates 12 facilities across a 300-mile area, including summer camps and childcare centers.

Recent achievements include opening the $24 million Sands Family YMCA in Canandaigua and the YMCA at Innovation Square downtown, along with the Maplewood Family YMCA Teen Center, supported by Monroe County’s American Rescue Plan Act funding.
