The City of Ithaca is starting the new year with significant changes in its governance structure, including the inauguration of Robert Gesualdo Cantelmo as its new mayor.
Mayor Cantelmo, who previously served the city’s Fifth Ward on Common Council, was officially sworn in at a small ceremony on Friday.
A formal swearing-in for Mayor Cantelmo and the members of the Common Council is scheduled for Wednesday at 5 p.m., preceding the first Common Council meeting of 2024.
During this meeting, Cantelmo will deliver his inaugural State of the City address. His campaign for the mayor’s office, launched last January, focuses on key issues such as implementing a green new deal, public safety reform, housing affordability, and restoring morale in city hall.
