Ian Phillips announces bid for NYS Assembly in 126th District

Ian Phillips, currently serving as the president of the Auburn city school board, is setting his sights on a higher political office.

He aims to secure the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Assemblyman John Lemondes in New York’s 126th Assembly District, covering parts of Cayuga and Onondaga counties.

Phillips, an Auburn resident, decided to run for the state Assembly following two pivotal experiences. The first was a disheartening meeting with Lemondes in Albany, where he felt the assemblyman failed to address the Auburn Enlarged City School District’s concerns about state education funding.

The second was Lemondes’ press releases, which Phillips felt overlooked local issues in favor of other topics.

Currently, Phillips is a regional political organizer for New York State United Teachers. Having been elected to the Auburn school board in 2018 and reelected in 2021, Phillips now prioritizes education in his platform, along with protecting local lakes and advocating for an affordable economy.
